Unfixed Matter is a series of mixed-media works created by physically distressing Instax photographs and introducing acrylic inks into their surfaces. The original images are disrupted, obscured and transformed, allowing new forms to emerge through an exchange between intention, material and chance.

The series draws upon Martin Barnes’s discussion in Shadow Catchers of the photograph as both image and physical object and of photography as a generative rather than purely imitative medium. Here, the photograph no longer records a stable subject. Its surface becomes the subject: a shifting field of traces, ruptures and accidental formations that move between the geological, biological and imagined.

Each work remains unfixed, resisting a single origin, identity or interpretation.
