Project Description
Dear Letterbox is an ongoing photographic correspondence that transforms Singapore’s overlooked letterboxes into portraits, inviting the people behind them to become part of their story.
Dear Letterbox is a photographic study of the humble letterboxes found across Singapore’s housing estates, shophouses and apartments. These often-overlooked objects quietly record the passage of time and the traces of those who live behind them.
Each letterbox carries its own biography through faded name tags, layers of paint, dents, scratches and makeshift repairs. Photographed as individual portraits, they reveal a visual language of human presence. Ordered yet personal. Uniform yet individual. Beyond their practical purpose, they also serve as markers of place and identity, connecting people to the spaces they inhabit.
The photographs are printed as postcards, each carrying a handwritten message beginning with "Dear Letterbox," and a personal observation about its subject. Each postcard is hand-delivered through the very letterbox it portrays, inviting its occupant to write a response and return it using prepaid postage. A QR code offers further insight into the project.
Those that return carry the words of their recipients alongside the physical traces of their postal journey. Others may never return. Together, they form an ongoing correspondence between photographer, place and the people behind these everyday objects.
Dear Letterbox is both document and love letter to the act of waiting, the traces we leave behind and the quiet intimacy of everyday exchanges. In an age of instant communication, it celebrates a slower, more tangible form of human connection.
